AN Ad Nauseeam primer for LEgacy

I am working with my local community to come up with a Legacy gauntlet. One of the tasks I am working on is writing a primer for each Legacy deck.  here is the one I wrote for Ad Nauseam tendrils. Enjoy!

AD NAUSEAM PRIMER

Quick Description

Ad Nauseam Tendrils (ANT) is a storm combo deck that is built around the cards Tendrils of Agony, Ad Nauseam, and Past in Flames.  The first few turns is about setting up your hand with manipulation spells like Brainstorm, Ponder, and Preordain, and then tries to cast 10 spells in one turn using cards drawn by Ad Nauseam or by recasting already cast spells with Past in Flames.  Then it finds Tendrils of Agony with Infernal Tutor (Sometimes Grim Tutor) to and cast it with storm count 9+.

Strengths

-          Very fast

-          Multiple redundant pieces

-          Can fight through disruption

-          Skill rewarding

-          Good against non-blue decks

Weaknesses

-          Heavy amount inexpensive counterspells

-          Heavy hand disruption

-          Graveyard hate

-          Can just “Not draw it”

Notable cards

-          Past in Flames

-          Ad Nauseam

-          Tendrils of Agony

-          Infernal Tutor

Notable Interactions

-          When you cast Infernal tutor, you can retain priority and sacrifice Lion’s Eye Diamond to discard your hand with Infernal Tutor on the stack to gain Hellbent

-          Gitaxian Probe + Cabal Therapy

-          Cabal Ritual and Threshold

How to Play

The general idea of this deck is to get your hand to a critical mass of spells to cast a lethal Tendrils of Agony.  The deck is broken down into 4 parts: Mana, Hand manipulation, Hand Disruption, and win conditions.  Your first few turns should be setting up your hand for future turns, as well as disrupting your opponent disrupting you.  Your Hand disruprion should be used early, as well as late, not a bunch in the middle.  Cast it early to find out what your opponent is playing, and to get a good idea of what their next few turns will be like and get an idea for when will be a good time to “go off.”  If you have it when you are ready to go off, and your mana can afford it, use it to make sure that the coast is clear.  The generally idea is to build up a lot of mana, and cast infernal tutor with Hellbent. And find either Past in flames or Ad Nauseam.  An Ad Nauseam is normally what you get if you are trying to go for an early kill.  An Ad Nauseam from 17 or higher life is normally death for the opponent (barring interaction).  Past in flames is what you can go for if you are under the gun and your opponent doesn’t have graveyard disruption. Make sure you know you can go off before you do.  Count the line ahead of time and make sure you a) have enough mana and b) have enough storm count.  This deck is a great goldfish deck, and you should go through the motions with it plenty of times before you bring it to an event.

Sideboard Options

-          Abrupt Decay – For Counterbalance, and general hate cards

-          Massacre – For removal of creature based hate cards

-          Echoing truth – General hate card removal

-          Xanthid Swarm – For countermagic

-          Carpet of flowers – for extra mana against Blue decks

-          Thoughtseize – For more hand disruption. Can also try and fight other combo decks

-          Chain of Vapor – See Echoing Truth

-          Dark Confidant – For use against Hand disruption decks

Sideboard Cards to watch out for

-          Ethersworn Canonist, Rule of Law, Gaddock Teeg – Prevents you from storming.  MUST remove before you go off

-          Rest in Peace. Leyline of the void – Can go off through them, but much harder. Makes Past in Flames useless

-          Mindbreak Trap, Flusterstorm – The ultimate Counterspells against you.  Mindbreak trap can be used in non blue decks

-          Leyline of Sanctity – Normally used in other combo decks to fight hand disruption, double up as preventing you from killing them.  Must be able to get rid of before killing opponent

A “purrito” is a cat or kitten that is wrapped up like a little kitty burrito, and they’re all over the Internet.
