Why is Tarmogoyf so aggressively costed compared to other lhurgoyfs if he's the most versatile to begin with? Is it because he has a finite maximum size while the others can be "combo-ed" with some form of (self) milling? By the way, are lhurgoyfs a creature type exclusive to Dominaria?

markrosewater:

I actually turned him in as a 2G */*. He was removed from the file for a green planeswalker (an early Garruk) but when planeswalkers weren’t ready yet we pulled them from the file. Tarmogoyf went back in the set with reminder text that hinted at planeswalkers coming.

Mike Turin, Future Sight’s lead developer, put in back in the file from memory. He thought it was a 1G */*+1 because that’s the stats of the original Lhurgoyf.

And that us how Tarmogoyf ended up at the cost and stats he did. Mike felt okay with it being aggressively costed because “it was just a dude”.
